15mm Battlefront Stuart Tank - DS

US005 M5A1 Stuart
My fiancee does a good job of buying Christmas gifts.  It's quite rare that I get something I really want, as opposed to nice things I like such as shirts, socks, dvds, and gift certificates.  The Stuart rates up there with surprises of Christmas past like:  the Mego Planet of the Apes Treehouse, the Ideal Toys Gunfight at O.K. Corral game, the blue box edition of Dungeons and Dragons, and an electric guitar.

It's nice to paint something different than British Airborne infantry.  I will have to get some sort of U.S. WWII project going.  There still needs to be some work with how I shade and highlight the figure too, although I am pretty happy with it.  Decals really provide a nice finish to the model.

Thanks Emily!

28mm Copplestone Spies - DS

Models from: Top Agents #KKBB101.
The models are from Copplestone Castings "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!" 1960s spy line.  Wargames Soldiers & Strategy #62 cover story and featured articles were on spies, secret missions, and skirmish gaming.  It prompted me to finish up these guys.  This pair will make a great duo of "by the book" CIA/FBI agents.

There is a very Sean Connery era James Bond feeling to this line of figures.  Copplestone has a good selection of spies and some modern terrain prop sets such as; bank furniture, a variety of doors and entrances (for your own scratch builds), and 1960s looking lab and missile launch control consuls.  There is also a mini-sub and a snow kat arctic snow vehicle for missions in colder climes.

15mm French House for Napoleonics to WWII - DS

I picked this building in the late 80s on a trip to Baltimore.  Let's just say, it has been sitting around for a while waiting to be painted.  It is from the now defunct games and miniatures distributor Armory Distribution Inc.   This building was made by one of their side companies Gallia.

I paid a call on the Armory during a trip visiting relatives.  The owner's son, Skip Lipmann, gave me a tour of the facility.  They had just opened up a retail store front as I guess Baltimore didn't have any gaming stores to speak of.  Skip was a nice guy and I enjoyed the couple of conversations we had over the years talking shop and gaming.  Armory Distribution was a typical warehouse full of all the products needed to stock hobby stores.  It smelled of cardboard!  Having worked in a warehouse before that smell always makes me nostalgic.

The production area for Gallia was located inside the warehouse and consisted of a couple of  long work  tables attended by an older woman, whose name I do not recall. She checked the orders, poured the resin, and packed the final products to be shipped.

Incidentally, the terrain boards I use to photograph the figures on were a product line made by Skip.  They are 1' x 1' styrofoam and have a couple different different features on them.  There are roads, rivers, creeks, depressions/ditches, and shoreline.  A couple of them have a painted green or straw colored area that one might use for forests or wheatfields.  Skip found a spray flock for the grass that made production quicker than gluing it down by hand.  They are nice and convenient but not great.  I would like to try my hand at making some more realistic and varied terrain boards someday.

Arundel Archers in action at Nuffleween!! mkl

On the 3rd of November the guys from the podcast BothDown put on a BloodBowl tournament. It was a blast with 4 games all day Saturday. This is a shot of youtr beloved Arundel Archers in a match versus the 2nd place finisher Bryan Hill and his Chaso team. This was my only loss of the tournament as I went 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss. I had a great time and played 4 fantastic opponents. Orclahoma will be held in the beginning of March and you will see the tournament side of the Arundel Archers in action once again.
I did not come home empty handed as I won the Best Sportsmanship award!

Next for the Arundel Archers, after coming off winning the Dark Skull Championship and losing the teh Cold Ones in the league championship 1-0, is the season ending Blood Bowl. This will be set of bowls where you have to loose twice to be eliminated.

Unleash the Wargs

The Wargs have come forth to aid the Moria Goblins.  Adding a fast unit to an otherwise slow army, the Goblin tactics may change a bit.  In any event, here are the latest additions to our LoTR/WotR forces:

Brother Marcus

The old gang decided to spin up an AD&D campaign, so I turned to Reaper for inspiration and found the 'Friar Stone Traveling Monk' pictured below.  Add a little paint, a quick back story and I'm ready to roll!

Malcom is jovial and quick to share his mead with others in exchange for stories of far away places.  As a Cleric of Fharlanghn he crosses the countryside ensuring the roads are safe for all travelers.  Of course, a journey is always a little more enjoyable when you bring a keg along...

Novik and the Six Dwarves

Rumors of Blackwolds abound.  The people of Archet are frightened. Novik has heard the call and is riding with all speed to place himself firmly between the bandits and the good folk of Archet.

My LotRO and Dragon Age II character has made the jump to physical form in preparation for our upcoming struggles to save Archet.  I selected the Gamling model from Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings line and added a shield to get the look I wanted.

In addition, I am preparing for other LotR SBG battles by expanding my forces.  The first six Dwarf Warriors have jumped into action.  Unfortunately, their first outing against a band of Moria Goblins did not go so well.  All the more reason to add to their ranks.  I have 18 more recruits waiting to be equipped!

From Paper, to Computer, to Miniature: The Travels of a 30 Year Old Character

"I've been around 30 years?!  Zounds!"  Still ready for action, Saladian waits for his next call to action.

While doing a project to create a character miniature for an upcoming game, it occurred to me that I have been playing various iterations of said Advanced Dungeons and Dragons character, off and on, -for the past 30 years.  That's kind of a long time.  It made me start thinking about all the mileage I have gotten out of the concept.  It also struck me, as I don't actually consider him one of my older characters...

The original creation of Saladian occurred in the early 1980s. He was rolled up by my friend Joe C, who was running an AD&D campaign using Dave Arneson's Blackmoor setting. The character fit paladin stats, and as Joe was going to be DM-ing, he offered Saladian to me to use in the game.

Up to that time, I had never tried a paladin. The idea of playing a knight, as opposed to my earlier characters, a thief and barbarian, had some appeal. There is a great picture in the Player's Handbook of “a Paladin in Hell”, where the hero is facing off, precariously on a mountain cliff, battling against a wave of devils. It was very evocative of real heroism and last stands...Remember the Alamo/Rourkes Drift type of stuff. I have always had a soft spot for the optimistic, truth and justice for all, types of characters that paladins exemplify: Superman, Capt. America, Capt. Marvel (aka Shazam), Mr Rogers, and John Wayne.

A Paladin in Hell by David C. Suthland III

In 1st Edition AD&D, the paladin was a very strong class, and it was tough to roll up given the rules we used. There were also the alignment, magical gear, and wealth restrictions to consider. I think a lot of my interest in paladins is the challenge of running them with the codes of conduct that must be maintained.  I had the name chosen for an Aladdin type rogue, but I decided to apply it to the new character.  Saladian the Paladin was born!

...I think that sounds cooler if you're 15.  And it's the 1980s.

The DM duties switched from Joe C. to Joe H, and I leveled the character up in the classic Temple of Elemental Evil, other TSR modules, and his original creations. The Blackmoor part of the game was retconned out of the storyline.  Joe H. initially placed the campaign in Greyhawk, but eventually moved to the Forgotten Realms. In our vision of the D+D world, both settings were on the same planet, just different continents. When Joe decided to use the Forgotten Realms campaign, we just hopped on a ship in Keoland and landed in Waterdeep.

I played the character off and on until the early 90s. Fun highlights of the campaign were; interesting NPC henchmen I picked up along the way (boy, did I have charisma!), asking opponents to surrender before engaging them, getting a Holy Avenger sword, fighting in a war, outliving most, if not all, of the original party members, and finding out that in the quest to receive my paladin warhorse; it was guarded by a red dragon. Eeep.

Saladian never got that steed, because that's where things ended. As most campaigns go, it faded from the world with a whisper rather than a bang. We moved onto other games and characters, players moved on, and Saladian remained unused in a character folder.

The Return(s) of the Paladin!
Fast forward to 2002. Bioware released a Dungeons and Dragons computer game called Neverwinter Nights. It had probably been 5 years since I had anything to do with D+D, but the lure of a customizable game enthusiastically brought me back. The computer medium allowed several of my characters to make returns to gaming in the form of digital avatar!

Other computer games saw Saladian used as a character. Once one has a graphical reference to use, the looks of a character start to take shape.

Saladian in Lord of the Rings Online

Saladian in Dragon Age II

Breaking it down, Saladian is a blond guy with an Abe Lincoln style beard. He fights with sword and shield.  In both LOTRO, and especially Dragon Age II, I was really able to get what I considered his look correct.  The Dragon Age II creator really captured the concept I had envisioned.

Around 2007 our group started playing Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. It's a skirmish game that uses a similar system to that of the Warhammer Historical line of rule sets. They are fairly straight forward and enjoyable set of rules without being over encumbered with complexity. For a couple of years we had been batting around the idea of recreating the Battle of Archet, which is the introductory storyline in Lord of the Rings Online, using miniatures.

The New Frontier:  Customizing a Mini
Since we were doing the battle based on the LOTRO game, we decided that it might be fun to run it as a mini campaign using the same characters we play ingame. I actually have 2 Saladian characters in LOTRO, one a Captain and the other a Champion, so it was he whom I chose to use. Thus I began my quest to make a Saladian miniature.

Games Workshop's Rohan Captain (pack includes mounted figure)

I have not done much in modding figures.  The thought of ruining perfectly good figures, and spending a lot of time doing it, always made me shy away from anything that wasn't a simple mod.

For Saladian in Middle Earth, I picked a Rohan captain.  The mini is nice and it had animated pose. It had a helmet on, and that could be Saladian, but I wanted to make it a bit more personalized than just painting it out of the pack.  The process of sawing the head off was very slow!  Pewter is much harder than lead, put I did not want to do a butcher job on it.

The head I was swapping onto the Rohan Captain came from a Perry Miniatures American Civil War plastic boxed set.  The replacement head actually had a “chin strap” style beard (aka a Lincoln), so it fit the bill!  The Civil War miniature's heads all come bald, (so you can put a forage cap, kepi, or soft cap on it.)   After the head swap, I added the hair was with a couple of layers of Citadel “paint on” green stuff.  It's not a replacement for regular green stuff, but it makes a nice filler and worked well for adding the hair.

"The Blackwold brigands are nearly upon us.  Summon the rest of the Dale Wardens.  We must defend Archet...."

It was a fun project bringing the character to miniature.  It took me outside my hobby comfort zone, and that's a good thing.  I always tell people to "learn by doing", and on this occasion -I took my own advice.  Something I dreaded starting proved very worthwhile to me.

Believe it or not, there was also some reminiscing too.  Saladian, it's taken 30 years, but now you are in miniature form too.  Thanks for the memories.

The Chaos Cup is a Draw!! mkl

Well, after 19 turns (for each of the 4 players) and 10 hours of Blood Bowl playing the Choas gods had enough and stopped the game and awarded each team with one mutation for one random player.

The rookie Gwindor Séregon grew extra arms. He was acquire in mid season after Ereinion Luinwe was killed. In Gwindor's first game against the power house Krakens he had 2 casualties and intecepted and pass and ran it in for the touch down.

Next season starts in just over a week and the league is hoping for 32 players (with about 22 confirmed and the deadline is not yet upon us). The structure will change from a 1 division league to a premier type league. The teams will be ranked by fan factor. There will be an eight team premier division, 8 team 2nd division then a 2 group division. Teams play within your division. At the end top four of the premier and 2nd division go into the period playoffs. The bottom 4 of the premier league gets relegated to the 2nd division. In the 2nd division the top four (who made the playoffs) get promoted to the premier league and the bottom four get relegated to the 2 group division. The top 2 of each group in the 2 group division get promoted to the 2nd division. Should be pretty fun!!!

You can follow all the action at:

See you next season!!

Arundel Archers in the Semi Finals of the Chaos Cup mkl

Hello everyone, This is a picture of the semifinals of the Chaos Cup. The Arundel Archers won the luck of the draw and were chosen. What a wild game of blood bowl this is with 4 people playing at one time. This is a picture of the board just after my turn 1. If you notice Erestor has the ball but just read on... Photobucket
Click on picture to see the whole thing.

On my first turn of the and during my first pass action there was a Chaos Effect called “Raining Blood”. This effect was -1 when passing the ball. One of my chuckers Celebrimbor dodging and jumping around the Kemri players picked up the ball and threw it to Erestor successfully. When it was the next players turn, The Hell’s Hotties, another Chaos effect was triggered which happened to be the Favor of Khorne which states that the ball furthest for one of the Hell’s Hotties players loses the ball. Erestor was dumbfounded when the ball he was holding on to for dear life disappeared into the warp. Back to my turn and during a blitz another chaos effect was triggered. This time it was the Favor of Tzeentch. Since the Archers were playing for Tzeentch the ball from the warp appeared at my obelisk (battery in the picture) and it scattered to the square of Celebrimbor’s brother Dinendal who is the star chucker on the team. During my turn 3 Dinendal runs at full movement to get a short pass to Maeglin Ancalimon who then ran it in for the only touchdown of the game. In this game every team had a real chance to score but it did not happen. Even on the Archers last turn I had a chance to chuck the ball to a lineman who could run it in with one go-for-it but the initial pick up the ball failed (rolled “1” with no re-rolls) and the pass did not take place.

Can’t wait for the final!!

p.s. We started the final today. We are starting turn 14 when we get back to my house Tuesday night. It is sudden death!!!
